Trump Fraud Convictions: Over 1,000 This Year, and Comey Is Awaiting Trial | Rod Martin

I will believe it when I see an arrest, conservatives keep saying. Rod Martin says forget arrests. Over a thousand welfare fraud convictions this year alone.

This is the answer to the loudest complaint on the right, and Rod Martin gives it with a list rather than a slogan. He has been arguing online with people who insist nothing is happening on fraud. His response: convictions, not arrests, and more than a thousand of them just this year. Anthony Fauci's top aide has been convicted and is awaiting sentencing, with a statutory maximum of five years and a two hundred fifty thousand dollar fine. James Comey is awaiting trial on two separate indictments.

Then Jenny Beth Martin asks the question that makes the rest of it make sense. Why do you have to go after the little fish first? Because fraud is hidden, Martin says. Nobody takes out an ad announcing it. You find the people holding the evidence, you flip them, and you work up the chain. It is Eliot Ness going after Al Capone, a hundred years later, and Capone went down for tax evasion rather than for anything anyone actually cared about.

The last two minutes are the part almost nobody has heard. Kash Patel and Pam Bondi built a theory of the case that treats the conduct coming out of 2016 as one grand conspiracy rather than a pile of individual crimes. That does two things. It reaches back before the individual statutes of limitations ran, so long as the conspiracy was ongoing. And it lets prosecutors bring the case anywhere a material fact occurred, instead of in Washington, where Martin says every one of these people would walk. A grand jury in the Southern District of Florida had already heard 130 witnesses by the end of March.

Rod Martin chairs the Institute for the American Future and writes The Rod Martin Report.
