The Democratic Socialists of America describe a future with no bills, no debt, no mortgage, and no landlord. Ovidiu Frusina, a mechanical engineer who grew up in Nicolae Ceausescu's Romania, lived in that future, and in this clip from part four of the Surviving Communism panel he walks through it line by line. No debt, because nobody could borrow. No mortgage, because nobody could own; the state was the landlord, it set the rent, and it decided a family of four got a two-bedroom apartment of about 500 square feet. Frusina's family of seven had one. The rent was small; the heat did not exist, and the electricity went off at nine. The state pension came to a few dollars a month, so families kept their parents at home to feed them. School was mandatory, but the government decided how many doctors and engineers it needed that year, and 25,000 children competed for 2,000 university spots. The rest went to the army or a trade. He describes hanging off the side of a packed trolley and watching people fall. Then Manuela Callini, who grew up under Romanian communism, adds what the lights-out life was like for a student: two hours of electricity a day, homework before dark, and the government deciding by license plate which days you were allowed to drive. Jenny Beth Martin's question to the socialists stands: show me where this has been implemented and works.
