Last week her 14-year-old grandson showed her a post about New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and said he has some good ideas: free groceries, free housing. In this clip from part four of the Surviving Communism panel, she gives the answer she gave him. Nothing is free. They take it from all of us to distribute, so you work fifty or sixty hours a week to hand half to someone who plays video games all day. Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev, Soviet physicist and Moscow Helsinki Group dissident, corrects her with a joke that is not a joke: they take more than half, because under distribution according to needs, the man of leisure has more needs than the man who works. Jenny Beth Martin turns it into advice for every parent watching. Log in to your kids' social media accounts, not to spy, but because everything on their screen is tailored to what they already liked, and you cannot answer what you cannot see. Nature abhors a vacuum; if you do not fill it, someone else will. Gibboney closes with a plea to young Americans to spend a month in a communist country before voting for one, and with the line that ends the hour: the United States is the only country that has kept its freedom for 250 years.
