The administration's message to anyone thinking about defrauding the taxpayer is simple: don't do it, go get a job instead. In this segment Jenny Beth Martin plays that warning, then plays Small Business Administrator Kelly Loeffler announcing the largest fraud enforcement action in the agency's history. As part of Operation Heartland Surge, the Small Business Administration has suspended 870,000 borrowers tied to an estimated $39 billion in taxpayer money across 45 states and territories. Add the five states announced earlier, from Maine to Minnesota to California, and the total reaches all 50 states and about $49 billion.
Loeffler has a plainer name for waste, fraud and abuse. She calls it lying, stealing and cheating of our tax dollars. Jenny Beth asks Robert McNeily why 562,000 loans that were flagged for fraud years ago were never sent to Treasury for collection, and why it matters that somebody is finally looking. His answer: fraud is a hidden tax that adds to inflation, and it costs the average household around $300. Jenny Beth translates that number. Three hundred dollars is a week or two of groceries for the average American family.
Skylar Duensing makes the case that small businesses are the backbone of the country, that the pandemic consolidated economic power into large corporations while small businesses were allowed to fail, and that the people who talked about caring did nothing while this administration is actually doing something. Jenny Beth adds the principle underneath all of it: Tea Party Patriots Action will debate whether a program should exist at all, but when a program is funded, the money must be spent as intended, not stolen.
