The Democratic Socialists of America promise public ownership of the largest corporations and essential industries. Captain Onofre Gutierrez, born in Managua, Nicaragua, and a survivor of the Sandinista takeover, calls that the biggest lie communism tells, and in this clip from part four of the Surviving Communism panel he explains why it works on a high-school student and falls apart the moment you ask who decides. How much of Tesla would you own? Who defines an essential industry? Jenny Beth Martin admits the pitch is seductive, which is why she put six survivors in front of it. Ovidiu Frusina, a mechanical engineer from Nicolae Ceausescu's Romania, asks what stops a young person from building the next company instead of seizing one. Then Gutierrez makes the prediction people laugh at: it took the Sandinistas twenty years to topple Somoza, give this movement thirty, and once there is no army, no ICE, and no border, ask who moves on Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev, Soviet physicist and Moscow Helsinki Group dissident, closes with the line from the Internationale: first destroy the existing world, then build the new one. Every line on the socialist program, he says, has an almost identical quote from Marx, Lenin, or Stalin.
