Dr. Renata Moon is double board certified in general pediatrics and hospital pediatrics and has practiced for roughly thirty years. In all that time, before 2020, she saw two cases of myocarditis. One decades ago, one early in her work as an attending physician. That was it. She describes adult cardiologist colleagues telling her the same thing, that they could count their cases on one hand across an entire career.
Then, she says, that changed. She is careful about what she claims: she is not saying she personally treated a wave of cases. She is saying she began hearing about them from family, friends, and colleagues across the country at a frequency she had never encountered. Nurses from the hospital where she had worked came to her. Paramedics she knew told her they were seeing heart problems immediately following the COVID shots. The first responders were the most specific of all. After the shots rolled out for children, they were increasingly being called to middle school and high school track fields, where they would find a teenager clutching their chest. Some of them learned to ask one question: when was your most recent COVID shot. The answer, she says, was inevitably days earlier.
She also describes what her own termination taught the next generation of physicians, and why that worries her endlessly.
