Good news does not travel. That is the thesis of this whole hour, and this is the clearest case of it. Martin says the country now has its lowest violent crime rate since at least 1900, and Jenny Beth Martin stops him to make sure the audience hears the year rather than the arithmetic. It is also, he says, the largest single year decline in history: murder down 18.1 percent, robbery down 18.5 percent.
Then he refuses to let it sit as a statistic. These are people getting mugged. These are kids getting shot on the way to school. This is the thing your government exists and taxes you to prevent, and for years it did not.
His explanation has three parts. Illegal aliens leaving the country account for a large share of the drop. A handful of blue cities account for the rest of the problem: take Chicago, New York and Washington out of the numbers, he says, and America's murder ranking falls from first in the world to about a hundred and thirty sixth. And the National Guard went into Washington, which Martin puts in a line with George H. W. Bush in Los Angeles in 1992 and Dwight Eisenhower in Little Rock in 1957. The Guard has no arrest power, only the power to detain until an officer arrives, and Martin says that was enough, because the greatest philosopher of our time already explained that criminals are a cowardly and superstitious lot.
Jenny Beth Martin closes it personally. She felt safe in Washington before 2020, stopped feeling safe after, and can walk alone there again now.
