Sasha Gong, a former political prisoner in China, wants you to think what your school never taught you. Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev, the Soviet dissident exiled in 1980, says do not let grievances and laziness turn into blame for the system that gives you more opportunity than any other. Agnes Gibboney, who fled communist Hungary, says learn what you would lose, because if you lose your freedom, we lose it all. Ovidiu Frusina, who grew up in Ceausescu's Romania, borrows a line from a movie: show me the money. Show me where it ever worked, not on television, not in the movies. Captain Onofre Gutierrez, who lost everything in Nicaragua, names the false reality on offer: free housing, free health care, free daycare, and the promise that you will be equal. Yes, he says, equally poor. Manuela Callini closes with the first economics lesson she learned in an American college: there is no such thing as free housing. Ask what you are being promised, show up to your city council meeting, and read the bill.
