Agnes Gibboney's family escaped communist Hungary, and Hungary answered by revoking their citizenship, so she arrived in the United States belonging to no country at all. On June 30, 1983, she took the oath as a naturalized citizen, and in this clip from the final Surviving Communism panel she tells Jenny Beth Martin what that oath means to her now and what she would say to anyone watching who thinks socialism is worth a try: if the United States becomes a socialist country, the world is finished, because no other country stands up tall for everyone else.
Three more survivors answer the same question. Ovidiu Frusina, a mechanical engineer from Nicolae Ceausescu's Romania, says he was born again at 23 when he reached America, where he can say in public what would have ended him back home. Captain Onofre Gutierrez lost everything in Nicaragua, started over, and retired as an airline pilot, a story he says is possible only in this country. Manuela Callini, who grew up under Romanian communism, puts the difference in one line: here the people make the government, not the government the people, and she would have been arrested for saying so where she was born.
