Drew DiMeglio was in middle school when COVID hit. He is now a student at Hampden-Sydney College, the president of his College Republicans chapter, and a writer for Restoration News, the Carolina Journal, and The College Fix. In this conversation with Jenny Beth Martin, he explains what those years actually did to the people his age, and why watching Anthony Fauci plead the Fifth in front of a Senate committee was the moment that crystallized it.
His generation trusted the institutions. They trusted Fauci. They were told to stay home, to flatten the curve, and then they were pushed vaccines. They watched loved ones die without being able to see them. They watched a mother sitting alone at a football game get arrested. And now they watch the man who pushed all of it refuse to answer for any of it, with no remorse.
Jenny Beth, whose own twins are 23, walks through the cost: children were the least likely to get sick and were locked up anyway, test scores and reading and math levels fell, and families were forced to let people die alone by force of government. DiMeglio adds the piece that gets missed, that a generation shut out of normal life at its most social age is now showing it in mental health diagnoses and in how few people in their twenties are getting married.
