What do you say to the person who tells you his vote does not matter? Scott Presler, founder of Early Vote Action, answers with numbers, from memory, the day before the midterm elections. In 2024, Republican John Duarte lost his House seat by 187 votes. Republican Michelle Steel of Orange County, California, lost hers by 653. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa won her House race by six votes. Al Franken won a Senate seat in Minnesota in 2008 by 312. And the 2000 presidential election was decided in Florida by 537 votes. After each one: every vote counts, every vote matters.
Before the margins, guest host Robert McNeily asks the question for anyone with one free hour left before Election Day. Presler's answer is not a phone bank. Trust and respect are the two things you cannot buy, so go through your own phone and call or text every person you know who voted Republican in 2024, and ask them to vote tomorrow. He explains why Pennsylvania will probably be called before midnight now that ballots are due by 8 PM, and why the trucker, the mother of seven, the pilot, and the commuter stuck on the bridge from New York City to the Poconos should vote early next time rather than gamble on Election Day.
