The Democratic Socialists of America published a national program, and in this clip Jenny Beth Martin pulls up their website and reads it out loud without softening a word of it. Take a day off from work in a future without capitalism, they write, and maybe you will not need it so badly. You will not have bills. You will not have debt. You will not need health insurance. You will not pay a mortgage and you will not have a landlord, because housing is a human right. Your retirement is publicly funded. Food, education, energy, medicine and transportation stop being for-profit businesses and become common goods and utilities.
Jenny Beth stops on each one and asks the question the document never answers. If the grocery store is owned by the government, the government decides how much food you get and what kind. If energy is a public utility owned outright, the government decides whether your house sits at 68 degrees or 78 on a cold night. And if nobody has a house payment anymore, then somebody still owns the house, and it is not you. It is a one size fits all system, described as a modern day utopia, and she says plainly what a utopia always turns into.
This is not a fringe document. It is worth reading before you vote.
