Three House committees, Administration, Judiciary and Oversight, spent months investigating ActBlue, the platform that has raised $19 billion for Democrats since 2004, and their report calls its fraud prevention unserious. During the investigation, ten ActBlue employees, board members and attorneys were questioned about alleged foreign donations. All ten pled the Fifth.
In this segment Jenny Beth Martin walks Skylar Duensing and Robert McNeily through the findings one at a time. ActBlue told Congress that donors using foreign addresses had to provide United States passport information, but investigators found the system only checked whether the right number of characters had been entered, not whether a real passport number existed. Fraud analysts were repeatedly instructed to give donors the benefit of the doubt and to look for reasons to accept contributions even when a transaction raised red flags. ActBlue had already identified at least 22 significant fraud campaigns on its platform, several with foreign connections, and loosened its rules in 2024 anyway.
Jenny Beth explains why this lands so hard for Tea Party Patriots Action: after the IRS targeted the organization, every mention of a candidate is checked and rechecked, and anything that sounds like an endorsement moves to the separate political committee. A group handling $19 billion could afford good attorneys and good accountants. It chose the benefit of the doubt instead.
Pleading the Fifth is a constitutional right. It is not a confession. It is also not a defense, and the questions are still looming.
