This summer the Democratic Socialists of America published a national program. Jenny Beth Martin pulls it up on screen in this episode and reads it out loud, line by line, without editing it or softening it.
The program asks you to imagine a future without capitalism. No debt. No bills. No health insurance, because you will not need it. No mortgage and no landlord, because housing is a human right. Retirement publicly funded. Food, education, energy, medicine and transportation are no longer for-profit businesses at all, but common goods and utilities. Jenny Beth stops on every line and asks what it means in a real house on a real street. If you do not have a house payment, who owns the house? If the grocery store belongs to the government, who decides how much food you get? If energy is a utility owned outright, who sets your thermostat at 68 or at 78 on a cold night?
She then reads the rest of it: abolish the United States Senate, put the presidency underneath an empowered House of Representatives, pack or get rid of the Supreme Court, end the Electoral College in favor of a popular vote count, abolish ICE, and demilitarize, defund and ultimately abolish the police and the prison system.
The second half of the episode is the answer. With 48 days left before Election Day, Jenny Beth lays out 10 things any citizen can do: register voters, write postcards, make phone calls, text your own contact list, knock doors, become a poll watcher or a poll worker, volunteer with a local campaign, donate, and recruit five more people to do the same.
