Socialism Pitch: What a Survivor of Mao's China Tells a 22-Year-Old Who Likes It | Janice Trey

Socialism sounds good to a 22-year-old who just registered to vote. Janice Trey, born in a Cultural Revolution labor camp, answers him directly.

Jenny Beth Martin puts a question to the panel: there is a 22-year-old who just registered to vote, who likes what the socialists are saying, and who thinks every survivor at this table is exaggerating, because it was a long time ago and far away, and this is America. What do you say to him?

Janice Trey, chairman of the board of The Epoch Times, was born in a forced labor camp during China's Cultural Revolution. Her answer is direct. You have a bright future at 22, but see through the picture being painted and ask whether it is real and sustainable. Socialism promises to redistribute, but there is no free lunch; without competition, the money runs out. She points to the simplest comparison she knows: Taiwan and mainland China, the same people with the same intelligence, one a democracy and one a totalitarian state, with a difference in wealth you can measure. Then Hong Kong, promised one country, two systems in 1997, where holding an umbrella in a protest now leads to prison and the families of judges are threatened to get the verdicts the Party wants. A promise under that system is something they can take back.

She reminds the young voter that freedom is one generation from extinction, and that socialism does not arrive all at once; it is the frog in the pot, and the water warms slowly. Communism has never produced a lasting success anywhere. So go vote, ask the five whys, and remember that when something sounds too good to be true, it is not true.

Part three of the Surviving Communism panel with Jenny Beth Martin, Chairman of Tea Party Patriots Action.
