The bill is simple: proof of citizenship to register, photo identification to cast a ballot. The House already passed it last week, 216 to 212, by folding it into the annual defense bill. Now it sits in a Senate whose Majority Leader says he cannot find the votes. Jenny Beth Martin opens the hour on what the word "cannot" actually means in Washington, and on the senators refusing to go quietly.
Jenny Beth is joined by Driena Sixto, Spanish Media Director at the Lincoln Media Foundation; Curtis Houck, Managing Editor of NewsBusters at the Media Research Center; and co-host Robert McNeily for the full hour.
Today's topics:
• The Senate heads for its August recess with the SAVE America Act, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, still waiting for a floor vote
• Senators Mike Lee, Rick Scott, Jim Banks and Ashley Moody say they will not agree to recess until the bill is done
• Three vehicles carrying the bill: the National Defense Authorization Act, the Stop Insider Trading Act, and the reconciliation package that needs only 50 votes
• The pause on new strikes on Iran, Tehran's conditional response, and holding a coalition together heading into the midterms
• The President's executive order on the Smithsonian and the historians' associations calling the claim, quote, "simply untrue"
• Inside the White House Correspondents' Dinner: the moments, the Bruce Springsteen exchange, and Peter Baker saying it is time to rethink the whole event
• A co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America says on Fox News they want to seize corporations
• Senator Rand Paul releases Anthony Fauci's personal diaries ahead of Wednesday's Senate Homeland Security testimony, including early private talk of a lab origin
• Thirty-three Illinois counties vote to explore separating from Cook County, the same week a federal judge strikes down Governor Pritzker's tuition and aid law for illegal aliens
• Jim Jordan's criminal referral of Jack Smith over the text messages of 44 members of Congress, still sitting at the Justice Department
• New unemployment claims fall to 187,000, the lowest level since 1969
• Call to action: dial the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121, tell both of your senators to pass the SAVE America Act and not leave town until they do, then sign the petition at TeaPartyPatriots.org
