Last night was a tough night. Democrats won the Senate seats in Texas, Kansas, Iowa, and South Carolina, flipped Maine and North Carolina, and may have won Mississippi and Alaska, for at least seven Senate pickups and possibly eleven. Republicans lost the House, lost the governorships in Georgia, Texas, Ohio, and Iowa, and for the first time since 2010 Democrats will hold more governorships than Republicans. Jenny Beth Martin takes the losses head on, lays out what comes next in Washington, and explains why the Tea Party movement itself was born in the weeks after Republicans lost everything in 2008.
Host: Jenny Beth Martin, Chairman of Tea Party Patriots Action. No guests; a solo Election Day recap.
Today's topics:
• The Senate: Texas, Kansas, Iowa, and South Carolina went Democrat, Maine and North Carolina flipped, and Mississippi and Alaska are still in question. At least seven seats flipped, possibly eleven
• The House is lost. Speaker Mike Johnson says he will not run for minority leader; Jim Jordan is running and Steve Scalise is expected to
• Governors: Republicans lost Georgia, Texas, Ohio, and Iowa, with Kansas likely. Democrats will hold more governorships than Republicans for the first time since 2010
• State legislative chambers flipped in Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, Texas, and Georgia
• First recommendation: take a deep breath, turn off social media and the news for a day or two, and spend time with the people who are the reason you do this
• What is coming in Washington: the leadership contests in the House and Senate, a government funding deadline in a few weeks, and a new Democrat majority promising investigations and possibly impeachment hearings in January
• The 2028 presidential cycle starts now, and the search for the next Republican nominee with it
• Nearly 500,000 local elected seats in America: school boards, city councils, county commissions, and state legislatures. If you have ever thought you could do better, the Leadership Institute offers online training for candidates and campaign managers
• Tea Party Patriots Action and Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund want to hear which tools helped you this cycle and what else would have, as they refine their training and websites for 2027 and 2028
• Go back to the founding principles: the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the Bill of Rights. The Constitution and founding principles podcast series with Bill Norton is there to rewatch
• How the Tea Party movement started after the 2008 sweep: Top Conservatives on Twitter, Smart Girl Politics, the DontGo movement, Rick Santelli's rant, 48 tea parties with 35,000 people the next week, and more than 850 six weeks later
