Driena Sixto's parents were married in Cuba for ten years and chose not to have children under the communist dictatorship. Her father was jailed as a political prisoner for his activism, then granted a visa at the United States embassy. He has never gone back. She has never set foot on the island, because she considers the United States her home.
In this segment she explains why the people who escaped communism are the ones sounding the alarm now, and why so many of them spent decades being laughed at. Older Cuban Americans who warned that this country could go the same way got called crazy. Today outward socialists are winning elections and writing policy, and Sixto points to New York, where Mayor Zohran Mamdani's proposed tax on additional property is, in her words, straight-up socialism.
She also makes the argument that ties the whole hour together. Immigration and election integrity are the same fight, because people will use a vote they were never entitled to in order to take from their neighbor.
Jenny Beth Martin closes on what this says about the Smithsonian fight: a country that only teaches its own failures, and never teaches how many people it lifted out of poverty or helped escape communism, is failing the generation it is teaching.
