Dr. Torsten Trey was almost finished redoing his medical license in America when a newspaper story in early 2006 stopped him. A whistleblower, the wife of a Chinese surgeon, said her husband had confessed to removing the corneas of 2,000 Falun Gong practitioners, without consent. His first reaction was that it was impossible; no doctor would do that; it is against the medical oath. But she had risked her life to say it, so he followed the case for six months. A vice president of the European Parliament came back from China with the account of a practitioner found in a morgue with holes in his body and organs missing. Two Canadian lawyers phoned Chinese hospitals posing as patients and were told, on the record, that the organs were fresh and all from Falun Gong practitioners because they do not smoke or drink.
In July 2006 he went to the World Transplant Congress in Boston hoping to meet Chinese doctors. Two said the numbers were real given that China had no donor program, and a third, asked where the organs for his new transplant department would come from, answered: Falun Gong practitioners. That summer he founded Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting and pivoted his career from patient care to advocacy. He tells Jenny Beth Martin how it happened.
