Jenny Beth Martin's last question to Orren Wang is the one the Surviving Communism series was built to ask. He grew up under communism, lived through 1989, and now hears young Americans say they want to abolish the police, ICE, the Senate and prisons, with health care for all, housing for everyone and no capitalism. What does he think, and does he have a warning?
His answer starts bluntly. The people making those promises never lived under communism and do not know what they are talking about. Under socialism in the Chinese countryside there were no doctors; if you got sick you found a cure yourself. Give the government ownership, he says, and you lose your economic freedom first, then your religious freedom, then your political freedom, until you are subservient to the state. That is the road you do not even want to look at.
Then he says something he admits is not a popular opinion. Free-market capitalism is the way to prosperity, but it may need reform, and the reform he wants is an old one: break up the monopolies. Fighting monopoly, he reminds the audience, is a Republican idea. Theodore Roosevelt, a Republican president with a Republican Congress after McKinley's assassination, broke up the trusts so the free market could work. Part of socialism's appeal to the young, he says, is that this economy does not seem to work for them, and the answer is to restore the market, not abolish it. Jenny Beth Martin closes on the lockdowns and the Biden administration's interference as the overreach young people are actually reacting to.
Guest: Orren Wang, CPA, who grew up under communism in China, took part in the 1989 democracy protests in Chengdu, and came to the United States as a student in 1994.
