Jenny Beth Martin puts the principle plainly: nature abhors a vacuum. If there is an empty space and we do not fill it, the left fills it automatically. We should not cede that ground without speaking in that language and making sure people hear our side, especially when they will agree once they know what we stand for.
Driena Sixto agrees, then explains what it takes. Resources have always been limited. She credits this administration with eliminating foreign aid money she says was funding more extremist ideology, which in her view leveled the playing field, and our side has to take advantage of it now.
The hard part is not the strategy, it is the people. The most difficult part of her job is finding someone politically versed who speaks Spanish correctly, is talented at creating content, and knows what clicks. She has to make a lot of these activists from scratch, and she calls it finding a unicorn. Most younger Latinos know Spanish but not as well as English, and she includes herself: there were words she used in the political arena that she had never spoken with anyone. She stumbled at first, and now does regular media in Spanish, including Fox Noticias.
For anyone whose family wants daily news in Spanish without a left-leaning filter, which historically meant a choice between only Univision and Telemundo, she points to Claro y Directo América, where the news runs from ten in the morning to four in the afternoon and is available on replay. She hosts a weekly show there, and she is deliberately training the people who will replace her, because it is a tiring fight and newer generations have to follow in our footsteps.
