CBS News and YouGov surveyed 2,287 adults between August 12 and August 14. Among Democrats, 58 percent have a positive view of socialism and 32 percent have a positive view of capitalism, with 50 percent viewing capitalism negatively. That is a 26-point gap in favor of socialism inside one of the two major American parties. Then there is the number Jenny Beth Martin says jumped off the page while she was preparing: among Democrats with a college degree, 71 percent view socialism positively.
Angela Morabito's explanation starts with what is missing on campus. There is an incredible lack of ideological diversity at many colleges, which are supposed to be the free marketplace of ideas. Her own college experience was the opposite, and she says students who do not get that are worse off for it. If you spend four years hearing that capitalism is evil and socialism is great, she is not going to pretend it is surprising when people absorb it.
But her real concern is earlier than college. Civics proficiency for high schoolers, she believes, runs under one in four. That means people who do not understand the United States Constitution or why it was written, who do not understand how their own government works or why it was built that way. And these are people standing in a voting booth. Her phrase is that they have been robbed of a meaningful education, and without those fundamentals you are simply more susceptible to lies about the world.
Her suggested fix is almost too simple. If colleges genuinely want to teach students about socialism, bring in people who have lived under it. There is a reason nobody is fleeing Florida to go back to Cuba. Talk to people who have actually been through it and they will tell you it is terrible. Those voices, along with classical liberals and conservatives, are the ones missing from campus.
Co-host Robert McNeily ties it to the ground game. The Democrat Socialists of America are not fringe anymore, they are winning primaries and becoming the nominees, and he says the pipeline starts in the classroom. He talks about the free speech ball from his years with Turning Point USA, and about free speech zones, the marked-off squares on college campuses where you are told you may say what you want right here but not anywhere else. Last time he checked his pocket Constitution, it did not hand out designated spaces.
