Sleeping in a Car to Stop Obamacare: The Night That Sparked a Movement | Bill Norton

They slept in a car to stop Obamacare while Pelosi sipped wine on the balcony. Bill Norton on the night a movement grew up.
In this segment from The Jenny Beth Show, Jenny Beth Martin remembers the weekend Obamacare passed — and the Tennessee volunteers she discovered were sleeping in their car because they couldn't afford a DC hotel. Bill Norton recalls the same nights: activists on the ground with a bullhorn shouting "kill the bill," looking up to see leadership on the balcony swirling a glass of wine while a guitarist played.
That contrast became a turning point. Both came away convinced that passion and protest are the first way we share our voice — but not the last. As Jenny Beth puts it, at some point "you have to put away the rally signs and get to work": educate people, find productive avenues, get involved in elections, and understand the founding principles underneath it all.
This is a preview of the show's founding-principles training series, which begins airing Monday, July 6.
