Proof of Citizenship: She Asked Hundreds of Democrat Voters. Only One Disagreed | Merissa Caldwell

Proof of citizenship: she texted hundreds of Arizona Democrat voters and asked. Only one said noncitizens should vote. Merissa Caldwell explains.

In 2013 the Supreme Court told Arizona it had to accept the federal voter registration form, which asks for no proof of citizenship. Arizona's answer was a split ballot: a registrant who never documented citizenship cannot vote in state races, but still votes for President, United States Senate and Congress. Merissa Caldwell, founder and chairwoman of the Arizona grassroots group EZAZ, says the voter-roll cleanup has already found noncitizens on the rolls and voting, that the state's motor vehicle system walks noncitizens through registration, and that in a state where an attorney general's race was decided by 280 votes, that is not a rounding error.

The Supreme Court takes up Arizona's proof-of-citizenship rules on December 8, after the midterms. One federal judge has said only the states can decide who votes; the left argues the National Voter Registration Act stops a state from requiring proof. Caldwell's answer is that Congress broke it, which is why EZAZ backs the SAVE America Act, and that a state should be able to say no without a two-tier system.

Then the part the consultants would not predict. During the SAVE America Act debate she texted Democrat voters in Arizona and asked them directly what they thought of proof of citizenship and photo ID. Once they heard that Arizona law already requires both, they wanted the same rule at the federal level. One Democrat said noncitizens should be allowed to vote. The rest, she says, is a very small number of well-funded organizations.

Guest: Merissa Caldwell, founder and chairwoman of EZAZ, the Arizona grassroots organization that trains and mobilizes volunteers for voter registration, get-out-the-vote and election integrity work (ezaz.org). Robert McNeily, Director of Broadcasting and Grassroots Engagement at Tea Party Patriots Action, hosts in for Jenny Beth Martin.
