George Taylor spent forty-seven years in government, retired from the military and from federal law enforcement, and knows the Taliban well enough to call them what they are: a designated foreign terrorist organization. When his Delta Air Lines colleague George Glezmann vanished into Kabul, Taylor went to work beside Glezmann's wife, and that work took him into the Biden White House for meeting after meeting with high-ranking officials, including Jake Sullivan.
What he found, he tells Jenny Beth Martin, was a government at that level that was absolutely broken. No one was in charge. People were guessing. He calls it a headless state, with a president unable to make decisions and staff who did not know who was supposed to. One meeting with Sullivan turned contentious after Taylor says Sullivan disrespected Glezmann's wife.
Taylor worked the Georgia delegation too. He credits Representatives Mike Collins and Rich McCormick with doing everything they could to move the White House. Georgia's two senators, in his view, did the easy things that checked a box, promised calls to the White House that never happened, and earned an F. The priority, he says, was the election, not George's freedom. He sat Glezmann's wife down and told her the administration did not have the will to bring her husband home. He was right.
The good news is that Taylor already had open channels with President Trump's team, and he was confident George would be home within months of the inauguration. He was home in about two months, with no money paid to the Taliban, when special envoy Adam Boehler's team flew into Kabul to get him.
