For the past ten years, Agnes Gibboney says, she has watched which direction the United States is going, and now she hears the Democratic Socialists of America make the same promises her parents lived inside. In this segment of The Jenny Beth Show's Surviving Communism series, she tells Jenny Beth Martin why that pitch works: no rent, no medical bills, no health care costs sounds alluring to a young person with no experience of earning a living, at a time when life has gotten expensive. Then she asks her question. Electricity, gas, water, rent: how do you think you get it for free? There is nothing in this world that is free. They take it from here to put it there, and soon there is nowhere left to take from.
Jenny Beth Martin adds what a "free phone" from the government actually means. The government can shut it off at any minute, and it can track you and listen to you. Gibboney's mother was afraid her own mother would report her to the party; with a government phone, nobody has to report you at all. Gibboney's charge to the young: get a good education, do your own research, and if you can, spend a couple of months in a communist country and see how people live. She has. She describes Cuba today, where people work six days a week to eat, and says socialism and communism are the same thing with a softer word.
Jenny Beth Martin closes the exchange with the pattern that never changes: the promised utopia does not arrive, and what arrives instead is a tyrannical nightmare. Gibboney's answer is the phrase every communist government uses when the food runs out: coming soon.
