Lowest Primary Turnout in a Decade: Why Arizona's Loyal Voters Stayed Home | Merissa Caldwell

Arizona voting: a 94-year-old saved her number from 2024 and called. His early ballot had been switched off. Merissa Caldwell's simple message.

After Arizona's primary, EZAZ went door knocking, because turnout was the lowest on both sides in over a decade and the conservatives who always vote in primaries had not. What they heard at the door was that those voters' top concern is honest elections. What changed, Merissa Caldwell says: a state representative now running for secretary of state passed a run of election integrity bills, a new Maricopa County recorder she calls the best in the country took office, and when a vendor glitch surfaced in early voting, the recorder's office put out a same-day statement saying what happened and what it was doing. Her one simple message: in Arizona, the only way you will permanently get glitched out of your vote is if you do not vote.

Then two stories from her phone. A 94-year-old man who saved her number from 2024 called to say his mail-in ballot had not come. The primary had already passed, so she walked him through his voter dashboard, where his early ballot had been switched off. They turned it back on and signed him up for the recorder's text alerts, from a parking lot, after ice cream. And a couple in Mohave County, voting together for 76 years, with the wife in the hospital and a party office saying they could not vote this year. The county recorder can schedule a special election board that brings a bipartisan team to a hospital bed. No matter what, she says, you can find a way to vote in Arizona.

Guest: Merissa Caldwell, founder and chairwoman of EZAZ, the Arizona grassroots organization that trains and mobilizes volunteers for voter registration, get-out-the-vote and election integrity work (ezaz.org). Robert McNeily, Director of Broadcasting and Grassroots Engagement at Tea Party Patriots Action, hosts in for Jenny Beth Martin.
