Why are so many women making excuses for Lindsey Clancy? Father Frank Pavone says the excuses started years ago, and they started with abortion.
The Lindsey Clancy trial has a lot of people scratching their heads. Women online are twisting themselves in pretzels to justify a mother who took the lives of her three children, saying they can put themselves in her shoes. Jenny Beth Martin asked Father Frank Pavone, founder of Priests for Life, where that comes from, and his answer is the heart of this segment.
Father Pavone runs the largest ministry in the world for healing people after abortion, and he says the psychology is one his ministry sees every day. When someone carries the guilt of an abortion, or has spent years defending abortion while knowing deep down it is wrong, one common way out is to justify what other people do and to find somebody else to be the bad guy. If we hold her guilty, he asks, what does that say about everyone who ended a child's life earlier? The legal differences are real. In the human heart and conscience, he says, it is the same thing.
He points to the moral connection too, in the question Mother Teresa put before America at the 1994 National Prayer Breakfast with Bill Clinton in the room: if a mother may take the life of her own child, how can we tell other people not to take life? And he draws the line to the present: the reason some people are making excuses now is that they have been making them for years.
