On January 19, 2025, the guards walked into the Kabul safe house where George Glezmann had been held for more than two years and went to the room of the two other Americans. William, are you happy? You're going home tomorrow. Glezmann came out of his room to see, and they shoved him back inside and shut the door. He had heard enough. They were going home. He was not going anywhere.
A snowstorm held the flight for a day. On the morning of January 21, the last day of the Biden administration having come and gone, he stepped out into a trashed common room and found himself alone. They left me behind, he tells Jenny Beth Martin.
His wife, living overseas, had already been told by the outgoing administration that no American would be left behind, and she had started packing. The very next night Jake Sullivan called her and said, in Glezmann's telling, Alexandra, we were not able to liberate your husband. Good luck. And hung up.
Glezmann says the call killed him a second time. Then President Trump took office. On the one channel the Taliban let him watch, he saw Secretary of State Marco Rubio deliver a warning to the Taliban about the Americans it still held, and heard his own name. He was twenty pounds lighter and out of hope, but the game had changed.
