The two families met in 1997, the year Littell arrived in Florida. When his friend got COVID he was in the Orlando area, outside the hospitals where Littell held privileges, and Littell could not be his doctor. They gave him remdesivir. They did not give him ivermectin.
He was on BiPAP, awake, which Littell calls the most horrendous thing to have to endure conscious, and he told Littell he could not live like that and wanted the ventilator. Littell told him plainly he would not come off it. He knew. What he asked for instead was a priest.
This was the period when nobody was allowed in at all. A Filipino nurse helped. Littell called the parish down the road, and the priest came straight into the ward in his collar, because nobody was going to throw a priest out. He spent fifteen minutes in that room. He took a glove off so he could anoint him properly. Ten days on the ventilator later, Littell's best friend was gone.
Then the part almost nobody hears. When the hospital learned what had happened, it placed a security alert on the family — the man's own relatives barred from coming, because the rules had been broken when the priest walked in.
Littell carries it into the present tense: a doctors' lounge that same morning, twenty colleagues looking up from their computers, nodding, and saying nothing at all.
