Enes Kanter Freedom played eleven seasons in the National Basketball Association. He is six foot ten and two hundred and fifty pounds. He is also a man who legally changed his own last name to Freedom because of what this country meant to him after he came here.
Last night he showed up at a Women's National Basketball Association game in Chicago, at WinTrust Arena, and he was removed from the building.
What he is doing is not subtle and it is not meant to be. He has announced that he is applying for the 2027 draft. Robert McNeely, a former broadcaster and an Indiana resident, lays out the setup: the Chicago Sky have gone all the way to the far left of every cultural question in the league, and they were playing the Indiana Fever, where Caitlin Clark and Sophie Cunningham have been dragged into a fight they never asked for, for the crime of wanting to compete at the highest level.
Jenny Beth Martin makes the argument plainly. Kanter Freedom is not mocking anybody. He is holding up a mirror. If the rule is that anyone can declare themselves a woman, then the rule has to apply to a six-foot-ten, 250-pound man with over a decade in the National Basketball Association who towers over every player on that floor. Either the rule changes, or it applies to him too.
And she is careful about the part most people skip. He is going out of his way not to mock, not to make fun of, and not to be rude to adults who identify as transgender. That is not what this is. What it is, is a question about whether women's sports are going to be for women, and by women she means females, x and y chromosomes, the people who were girls at birth.
She also does something worth noticing: she gives the league room to change its mind. Nobody likes being proven wrong, and nobody likes being proven wrong on a national stage. She says she is praying they take the step back and do it anyway.
