Alexander Vindman raised 16.3 million dollars. Angie Nixon raised 975,000. On Tuesday she beat him by double digits, the first member of the Democratic Socialists of America to win a statewide nomination in the Democratic Party.
Jenny Beth Martin puts the second number of the week next to it. The national debt passed 40 trillion dollars on Tuesday. It took this country nearly two hundred years to borrow its first trillion, and we now borrow a trillion in under five months. The Congressional Budget Office projected we would cross the 40 trillion line in 2028, and we got here two years early. House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington says the federal budget borrows 6 billion dollars a day and more than half of that is interest on money already owed, which is more than we budget for the entire national defense of the United States.
Then the victory speech, and what was left out. Medicare for all, universal childcare, real affordable housing, fully funded public education. What she did not mention is what her organization's platform, published this summer under the title Workers Deserve More, actually calls for: abolishing the United States Senate, which is the body she is asking Florida to send her to, plus the presidency, the Electoral College, and the Supreme Court. Its own cochair defends this by calling the Senate a very undemocratic institution.
Five days before she won, the Democratic National Committee adopted a resolution urging congressional Democrats to write a bill abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and at the same meeting adopted a competing resolution to reform it instead. Chuck Schumer and the Democratic senatorial committee funded her opponent all primary and praised her within hours.
