The Supreme Court hears oral arguments on birthright citizenship THIS WEDNESDAY — and the stakes are higher than most people realize. Cleta Mitchell explains how China is exploiting the current birthright citizenship interpretation to manufacture American citizens on an industrial scale.
Here's how it works: Chinese nationals pay surrogate mothers — American citizens — to carry embryos to term in the United States. The child is born on U.S. soil, automatically receives citizenship under the current interpretation of the 14th Amendment, and may be raised entirely in China. At age 18, that child is eligible to vote in U.S. elections — whether or not they ever lived in America.
Peter Schweitzer's new book documents this scheme. Cleta Mitchell's estimate: over one million such citizens may already be in production.
This connects directly to the SAVE America Act and the documentary proof of citizenship requirement — because 19 states issue driver's licenses to non-citizens, and most states cannot distinguish between a citizen's license and a non-citizen's license.
The 14th Amendment says "subject to the jurisdiction thereof." The question before the Supreme Court: does Congress have the authority to define what that means?
