In essentially every state, Jason Snead tells Jenny Beth Martin, the law requires bipartisan or multi-partisan teams of people handling ballots inside the polling place. If only one party's people are touching the ballots, anyone who claims something went wrong is going to get a hearing. Two people from different camps agreeing on how to proceed is what makes the result believable to the side that lost.
The problem is where the conservatives are not. In the densely populated blue areas, Snead says, not a lot of conservatives are stepping up to be poll workers, and that creates a real recruitment problem. Those are the places the training tour is going: the blueberries in the tomato soup, the blue counties surrounded by red. He says what he finds on the ground is heartening. Election integrity was not a one-and-done issue after the last cycle. It has become part of the platform of being a conservative, and the grassroots base is committed.
Jenny Beth Martin says the left is not going to stop, and the right is more than meeting the moment. Both agree on the goal: every voter, left or right, should be able to trust the outcome no matter who wins. Snead puts it in terms of high school civics. Democracy depends on the consent of the governed, but it also depends on the consent of the losers. An election that follows the law and is secure lets the losing side know it lost fair and square and come back for the rematch. Change the rules, take away the safeguards, let fraud in, and you tell people their confidence does not matter. That, he says, is a downward spiral where people simply stop voting.
