Not the average score. The most common one. A teaching professor of mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley published her own students' numbers on Saturday, and she is standing in front of a calculus class teaching middle school fractions. Before California dropped the SAT and the ACT for admissions in 2020, seven in ten Berkeley calculus students arrived ready. Now it is fewer than half. Angela Morabito, who was press secretary at the United States Department of Education, joins Jenny Beth Martin for the full hour on the pattern behind it: the University of Michigan keeping first semester freshman grades off the official transcript, two Metro Nashville teachers who say the district told them to turn failing grades into passing ones, and the one state that reversed the collapse.
Guests: Angela Morabito, spokeswoman for the Defense of Freedom Institute and Visiting Fellow at the Independent Women's Forum, formerly press secretary at the United States Department of Education. Robert McNeily, Director of Broadcasting and Grassroots Engagement at Tea Party Patriots Action.
Today's topics:
• The Berkeley readiness test where the single most common score out of eight topics was zero, and the calculus student who could not solve seven x minus five equals nine
• Seven in ten Berkeley calculus students arrived prepared before 2020, and fewer than half do now
• More than 1,000 University of California faculty signed a systemwide petition to restore standardized testing in science and engineering admissions, and more than two thirds of the system's mathematics faculty signed a letter demanding it
• The University of Michigan's largest college will stop putting first semester freshman grades on the official transcript, with every incoming freshman enrolled automatically and no way to opt out
• Why the registrar still keeps those grades for athletic eligibility, financial aid, and academic honors, so the only people the record is hidden from are the student and a future employer
• Two former Metro Nashville teachers say administrators directed them to change failing grades to passing grades, with internal emails and resignation letters
• Samira Hardcastle, named Teacher of the Year at her middle school, refused to change a failing art project grade, says the district changed it anyway, and resigned in May after eight years
• The incentive nobody explains: whose bonus, whose rating, and whose federal report card improves when a school's failure rate drops on paper
• The strongest case for dropping the test, taken head on: the outgoing president of the University of California Student Association argues the SAT measures family money, and that applications rose 19 percent the year the requirement went away
• How much of the skills collapse is the pandemic and how much is a policy choice California made on purpose in 2020
• CBS News and YouGov: 58 percent of Democrats view socialism positively and 32 percent view capitalism positively, and among Democrats with a college degree, 71 percent view socialism positively
• Roughly one in three American men over 15 are not in the labor force, and male participation for men 20 and older has fallen to 66 percent from 73 percent in 2006
• The Mississippi model: fourth graders ranked 49th in reading and 50th in math in 2013 and now rank 9th and 16th, on $12,324 per pupil against New Jersey's $27,234
• Whether Mississippi's 2013 Literacy-Based Promotion Act just held children back, answered honestly, plus the science of reading retraining, the literacy coaches, and the early screening that came with it
• Where the SAVE America Act, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, actually stands: 52 Senate votes for voter identification when 60 were needed, zero Democrats voting yes, and the Budget Committee still working to attach it
• What a parent should ask tonight, who to ask it of, and the one thing to do today with 78 days left until Election Day
