Two hundred and fifty years ago, we declared independence from the most powerful empire on earth with no rational reason to believe we would succeed. We did. We have endured a civil war, two world wars, a depression, and our own hardest reckonings, and every generation decided this country was worth keeping. In this Fourth of July message, Jenny Beth Martin reflects on what we are really celebrating: not just fireworks and a birthday, but the most radical idea in human history, that your rights come from God, not government, and that no president, no congress, and no court can take them away.
When Benjamin Franklin left the Constitutional Convention, Elizabeth Powel asked what kind of government we had. "A republic," he answered, "if you can keep it." Jenny Beth shares her own story of losing nearly everything, more than once, and rebuilding in the one country that would still give her a shot, and she makes the case that keeping this republic is now our turn. The men who signed the Declaration pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. They did their part. Now we do ours, and hand liberty to the next generation.
Happy 250th birthday, America.
