A Chinese Immigrant on the Border: You Cannot Come Illegally and Claim All the Benefits | Orren Wang

Legal immigration done right: Orren Wang landed at LAX with $1,000, found the Bible study banned in China was legal here, then waited 14 years.

Orren Wang landed at Los Angeles International Airport in 1994 with $1,000 in his pocket. By the time he reached Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, a motel and a shuttle bus had taken a hundred of it, and the assistantship that was supposed to pay his tuition had not started. Two American teachers he had known in China, Pat and Wallace, sent a check for $400 so he could enroll. He paid it back in four or five months.

Jenny Beth Martin asks what it was like to arrive from China and meet freedom of religion, freedom of the press, economic freedom and private property for the first time. Wang says economic freedom came later; religious freedom came right away. A history professor on campus, a devout Christian, gathered the Chinese students and scholars every Friday for Bible study. In China, where Wang had already become a Christian, that was banned. In Kentucky it was a standing invitation, and it gave a man who knew nobody and did not know where to buy groceries a church and a community.

Then he describes the long part. With a master's degree in accounting, it took two years to find a firm willing to hire an international student. Employment led to a green card, and a green card led to citizenship, fourteen years after he arrived. He does not complain. Every country has its laws, he says, and the wait made him stronger. It is also why he supports President Trump's immigration policy: secure the border, keep the process, and do not let people come illegally and claim the benefits.

Guest: Orren Wang, CPA, who grew up under communism in China, took part in the 1989 democracy protests in Chengdu, and came to the United States as a student in 1994.
