$975,000 Beat $16.3 Million in Florida: What the Money Could Not Buy | Spencer, McNeily

$975,000 beat $16.3 million in Florida. Two Georgia organizers on why the money did not matter and what the message did.

William Spencer is Vice President of Membership for the Atlanta Young Republicans and a Marine Corps veteran. Robert McNeily is Director of Broadcasting and Grassroots Engagement for Tea Party Patriots Action.
Spencer saw it coming from inside a college chapter in Kennesaw. What he was trying to scream from the rooftops as he moved through the Georgia Republican apparatus was that the left keeps moving left. He told a Democrat classmate to look into it, because Democratic Socialists were entering the group and taking it over.

Then the money. Political science says if you put that much in and get that much face time, you win the race. What broke it, in his read, is that her opponent's entire message was that he dislikes Trump, and she at least gave answers. He is blunt that the answers were platitudes. Real affordable housing is Section 8. Real public schools, while there is video of a twelfth-grade teacher who can barely get his students through a paragraph. Real Medicaid and Medicare, while people who miss a checkbox spend six or seven months getting back on. It is not a funding problem, he says. Taxpayers are funding it.

Robert McNeily's answer is shorter. Their platform is to get rid of the United States Senate, so she is running for the institution she wants America rid of. He would go the other way and repeal the Seventeenth Amendment. The lesson from Tuesday night is that old-fashioned hard work, free media, boots on the ground, phone calls, and relational organizing can outspend the money against you.

Jenny Beth Martin closes the loop: none of it is free, and we are 40 trillion dollars in debt.
