Why did President Trump meeting Xi Jinping at the airport matter so much in Beijing? Sasha Gong, who spent a year in a Chinese jail and was released by Xi's own father, tells Jenny Beth Martin it comes down to one word: insecurity.
Gong met Xi's father face to face. He told her group he had spent sixteen years in a communist jail, five of them in shackles. While he sat in prison, Xi's mother remained a party cadre, walking a line so careful that the family's whole status depended on it. Xi grew up in the worst years of the Cultural Revolution, bullied because of his father, fighting back, and finally put into a detention center.
There, at 13, he taught his cellmates a Russian love song. Every song was illegal in that China. He was accused of spreading Soviet revisionism, dragged onto a stage, and paraded before hundreds of people. His mother was in the audience. When he could not stand it anymore and escaped home, she sent him back.
Jenny Beth Martin asks the question that follows: if your mother sends you to prison, how do you trust anyone for the rest of your life? Gong's answer is that you do not. Whatever position you reach, you feel insecure and you are afraid, and that is the Xi Jinping the world sees today. Supreme leader since 2012, he still needs to show the Chinese people that he is the boss, and a welcome in America is his triumph: paraded again before the whole world, this time without the cruelty.
