Jenny Beth Martin puts it plainly: Abdul El-Sayed took the Democratic nomination in Michigan, and in Oklahoma, N'Kiyla Jasmine Thomas won the Democratic runoff on August 25 with 58 percent of the vote. She faces Congressman Kevin Hern in November. So is what the Democratic Socialists of America are doing actually new, or does it only look new to the rest of the country?
Dwayne Moore's answer is that it is both. His read is that the party has gone from normal crazy to insane asylum crazy, that the people carrying this are cannibalizing the Democratic Party from the inside, and that anyone who knows what happened in the Soviet Union or in North Korea should not be treating it as ordinary politics. This is not the old fight over taxes and spending, he says, and pretending otherwise is how you lose.
Then he turns the argument around on his own side. Republicans have to do better, and the place they are losing is empathy. The left wins by sounding like it cares about people. Conservatives answer with facts and assume Americans should already know better. Moore taught ninth grade English for five years, and his point is that you go to the chalkboard and you explain A through Z, or you lose the room.
He closes on his own family. A heritage American whose people have been here since the American Revolution, starting from slavery, who went on to own a business and build across generations. The American dream is alive and well, he says, but if we do not make the argument for it, it will be taken.
