Jenny Beth Martin says it plainly: if this clip reaches someone young, they will not know what Tiananmen Square is. She remembers the man in front of the tank; young people today were never taught it. So she asks Janice Trey, who left China because of it, to explain.
On June 4, 1989, Trey says, students in Beijing had been protesting for democracy. China under Deng Xiaoping had been opening its doors to investment, and it was the year the Berlin Wall came down and Eastern Europe walked away from communist rule. China was handed the same opportunity and chose the other path. Tanks came up out of tunnels the regime had dug for nuclear war; nobody saw them coming. A friend of hers was one of the student protesters; exhausted after hours on shift, he went back to the dormitory for a nap, and that is when the tanks rolled out. Her best friend was a medical student working the ambulances that night, and he could not continue in medicine afterward.
The Chinese Communist Party, she says, kills its own students. And it has erased the record: her own cousins in China have never heard of the Tiananmen Square massacre. Jenny Beth Martin draws the line to America. In China the information is suppressed; here it is simply not taught; the effect is the same, and so is the danger. Trey closes with why she keeps speaking: she could have died in the Cultural Revolution or in that square, she is alive, and freedom is worth fighting for.
Guest: Janice Trey, chairman of the board of The Epoch Times and NTD, former CEO of The Epoch Times, former executive at five Fortune 500 and Global 500 companies, born in a forced labor camp during China's Cultural Revolution.
