Two weeks of Democratic Socialist wins in Michigan and Wisconsin, and the question is what actually holds that coalition together. Dinesh D'Souza takes it back to the root.
Socialism at its Marxist root was an economic idea: the rich against the poor, the bourgeoisie against the proletariat, managers against the working class. D'Souza argues that idea has mutated in two directions.
The first he calls identity socialism, from an earlier book of his. It keeps the rich against the poor and adds the white against the black, the male against the female, the straight against the gay. You take a set of identities, manufacture a division, declare your own side the victim, and assemble a coalition of victims. Marx expected the coalition to be the working class. This one is workers plus every other declared victim group.
That is the red. The green, he says, is the intersection point between Islam and socialism. Islam has never been committed to socialism as such, but D'Souza argues its entry into America and the West requires an enabler — a local guide who knows how the institutions work — and the left has been willing to play that role.
Then the part worth sitting with. He says figures like Zohran Mamdani and Abdul El-Sayed are not two sides making an alliance. Each of them is both at once: one aspect red, one aspect green, committed to the socialist agenda on one hand and, equally important to them, to the Islamification of New York and Michigan on the other.
