Jenny Beth Martin closes the show on one number, because it is the reason a movement that started seventeen and a half years ago is still fighting.
Five days ago the national debt of the United States crossed 40 trillion dollars. It went up 2.88 trillion in a single year to get there. Forty trillion is a number nobody can picture, so here is the version you can: it comes to $295,494 for every household in this country. That is more than most people's houses are worth, and every family owes it whether they voted for a dollar of it or not.
She names who has actually voted to slow it down. Republicans in Congress, through the one big beautiful bill, going after the waste, fraud and abuse, or as she puts it, the lying, stealing and cheating with taxpayer dollars. And they voted for tax cuts meant to grow the economy back to the point where gross domestic product is larger than the debt again, instead of where we are now, with the debt larger than everything the country produces in a year.
Then the contrast. People running on the Democratic side right now are campaigning to abolish the Senate, to abolish the Supreme Court, and to spend more. The Democratic Socialists are radical and they are extreme, and the mainstream Democratic Party is embracing them rather than rejecting them, the way Senator Chris Van Hollen did earlier in this episode when he said he would not seek their endorsement but would not turn it down either.
Her answer to that is the sharpest line of the hour. You are either for a government that takes over more and more of your life, or you are not. You cannot be for both.
