Surviving Communism: Seven Survivors, Five Countries, One Warning for America | Panel

Surviving Communism: seven survivors from five countries on ration cards, bribes for a hospital bed and childhoods spent in labor camps. One warning for America.

Jenny Beth Martin sat down in Atlanta with seven people who lived under communism in China, the Soviet Union, Hungary, Romania and Nicaragua. Between them, more than a hundred years of life under communist rule, and two come from countries where communism is still in power today. In this first part of the panel they describe the moment each of them realized their parents were not in charge of their own home, what a grocery run looked like when the government decided how much bread a family could buy, how "free" socialized medicine actually worked, and why a government that controls the food controls the people.

Guests: Sasha Gong, who was sent to the countryside at age nine and spent her 20th birthday in a Chinese jail; Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev, Soviet physicist and Moscow Helsinki Group dissident, exiled in 1980; Agnes Gibboney, whose parents fled Hungary in December 1956; Oviedo Frasina, born in Bucharest under Nicolae Ceausescu; Manuela Colini, who lived her early childhood under Romanian communism; Captain Onofre Gutierrez, born in Managua, Nicaragua; and Janice Trey, a child laborer during the Cultural Revolution who now chairs The Epoch Times.

Today's topics:
• The childhood memory when each survivor realized the government, not the family, ran the house
• China's ration card: 25 pounds of rice, 0.6 pounds of meat and four pieces of tofu per adult per month
• Romania's grocery run: in line before dawn, then sent home because the store ran out
• Exiled, not arrested: how a Western scientists' boycott over Andrei Sakharov got Yuri Yarim-Agaev out of the Soviet Union
• A Hungarian baptism the parents could not attend, because four people entering a church was a dead giveaway
• Socialized medicine in practice: bribe the doctor, the secretary and the nurse, and bring your own soap
• Nicaragua: 42 years of Somoza, then the Sandinistas, and the pattern Captain Gutierrez says he now sees in America
• Leaflets from Taiwanese balloons: how a child in a labor camp learned that cars and refrigerators existed
• Why "mature" communism no longer needs daily terror: people learn to censor themselves
• Civil rights versus so-called socioeconomic rights, and why "equity" means redistribution
• The professor's grading experiment: what happens when every student gets the class average
