Free health care for everyone was the promise in Nicolae Ceausescu's Romania. Ovidiu Frusina, who was born in Bucharest in 1967 and lived 22 years under the regime, tells Jenny Beth Martin what it delivered. When his elderly mother broke her hip, he flew in from America and found a hospital that admitted visitors two hours a day, so he paid the man at the door $10 under the table and walked in whenever he wanted, past the people behind him who could not. He found his mother soiled in her bed with nobody caring for her, so he did what you do under socialized medicine: he bought the nurses lunch, every day, and paid every one of them. When the doctor realized he was an American, his mother suddenly received care, and the doctor received thousands of dollars for a free procedure.
Then the system from the bottom: a family doctor you bribe to unlock his door, a desk clerk you pay for the appointment, beautiful big hospitals with excellent doctors and no light bulb in the surgery room, and a separate hospital where everything worked, for the secret service and the police. And his own case: appendicitis at 21 during exams, a call his mother made to the military hospital where she worked, and a surgeon who had to be paid about a month's salary for a free operation, with the nurses paid on top, or nobody brings the pain medicine. His question at the end is for every student holding a sign for socialism.
Guest: Ovidiu Frusina, born in Bucharest, Romania, in 1967; computer science graduate, former consulting business owner and father of four, Houston, Texas.
