Jason Snead of the Honest Elections Project draws the line most people on the right have never had drawn for them.
A poll worker is staff. You are on-site and under the law you are responsible for the work: checking voters in, confirming that the person is who he says he is, handling ballots correctly, making sure the tabulators are running. A poll watcher, or observer, depending on which state you are in, is there to keep track. If you see corners being cut you take notes and report it up the chain, and somebody else decides whether to act.
Jenny Beth Martin puts it the way she has said it for years. The poll worker is the one who is allowed to talk. When you can talk, you solve it on the spot, and it never becomes an issue at all. The watcher has to go outside, call the hotline, and by the time all that happens the ballot may already be cast.
Her example is the one everybody recognizes. Your next door neighbor walks up to your table, you start catching up about his kids, and you forget to ask for the identification. The person sitting next to you says, hey, do not forget the identification. Done. Most of what goes wrong at a polling place is that, not fraud, and the fix costs four seconds.
Snead's argument is blunt about the stakes. The left is recruiting for these seats right now, and nature abhors a vacuum. If the person next to you is not committed to following the law, nobody leans over.
He is also honest about the ask. These are twelve to fifteen hour days in most states, with no shift rotation. The average American poll worker is 67 years old. If conservatives want in-person voting to keep existing, somebody has to actually staff it, and that argument for all-mail elections goes away the day we do.
