Did you notice a difference between health care in America and in China? Jenny Beth Martin asks the question, and Lily Tang Williams answers with her mother.
In China the family lived under government-controlled, socialist medicine: long lines, filthy wards, doctors and nurses who did not care about the quality of care, and no money for prevention. Her mother was given an infected blood transfusion. By the time Williams brought her to the United States, American doctors found an infection that had gone untreated for more than a decade, easily fixed with antibiotics, but too late; it had already brought on early dementia. Her mother passed away in 2020 at 77. Even today in China, Williams says, you bribe the surgeon to get a bed for an earlier surgery date.
Jenny Beth Martin says out loud what people do not think about when they say "free health care for everyone": long lines, mistreatment, misdiagnosis, and bribing medical staff for basic care. Williams takes it one step further. If what happened to her mother had happened here, the family could sue. In China, suing the government is throwing an egg at a rock. She does not want government controlling health care because the government is people like you and me, plus unelected bureaucrats, deciding for you. She would rather choose her doctor and her insurer, hold them accountable, and be able to sue for malpractice. People frustrated with high costs turn to government, she says, but government caused the problem, and Congress writes the laws in favor of certain groups rather than a free market.
