For decades it has been illegal for foreign nationals to give money to candidates for American office or to political action committees. That firewall exists so the people running for office answer to American voters and nobody else. But the law has a hole in it: a ballot measure is not a candidate, it is treated as part of a state legislative function, and the federal ban does not reach it.
Jason Snead of the Honest Elections Project explains what came through that hole. The Sixteen Thirty Fund, one of the largest funders of left wing ballot campaigns in the country, has taken roughly 300 million dollars from a Swiss billionaire who has said publicly that he never wanted to become an American citizen. Over the same period the fund spent 130 million dollars driving ballot measures in 26 states, on state election law, on abortion, on the minimum wage. In Ohio in 2024 the target was control of the state's redistricting process, a fight Snead says could have moved three to six congressional seats and with them control of the House of Representatives.
Ohio banned it. Every Democrat in the Ohio legislature voted against the ban, in a special session called partly to keep their own presidential nominee on the state ballot. Attorney Marc Elias sued to overturn the law in Ohio and again in Kansas in front of a liberal district judge, and lost both times. Ten more states have passed a version of the ban since.
The rest of the hour is the plan for the state legislative sessions that open in January: upfront proof of citizenship modeled on Arizona, and the Supreme Court ruling that forced Arizona into a bifurcated ballot in the first place; an interstate system for cleaning the voter rolls that the American Legislative Exchange Council has adopted as model policy, built for the roughly 20 million Americans who move every year; the hardship exemptions still buried inside photo identification laws in Georgia and Texas; and voter identification for mail ballots, because signature matching can reject a real ballot and wave a fraudulent one through.
And the part you can do something about this week. The average American poll worker is 67 years old, the shifts run twelve to fifteen hours with no rotation, and the left is actively recruiting for those seats. Snead and Jenny Beth Martin make the case for signing up, and lay out the difference between the job that can fix a problem on the spot and the job that can only watch and report it.
