Foreign Money in Elections: The Swiss Billionaire Behind 26 States | Jason Snead

Foreign money in American elections: a Swiss billionaire gave roughly 300 million dollars to one left wing fund, and it spent 130 million in 26 states.
Federal law has banned foreign nationals from giving to candidates and political action committees for decades. It says nothing about ballot measures. Jason Snead of the Honest Elections Project walks Jenny Beth Martin through the pipeline that loophole opened, the eleven states that have now closed it, and what happened in Ohio when his team came with receipts. Then the rest of the plan: upfront proof of citizenship in the states, an interstate system for cleaning voter rolls that the American Legislative Exchange Council has already adopted as model policy, and the poll worker trainings running in Georgia, Nevada and Wisconsin over the next six weeks.
Guest: Jason Snead, Executive Director of the Honest Elections Project.
Today's topics:
• The federal ban on foreign money covers candidates and political action committees, and stops at ballot measure campaigns
• Snead says a Swiss billionaire has given roughly 300 million dollars to the Sixteen Thirty Fund, which spent 130 million driving ballot measures in 26 states
• Ohio passed the first ban after a foreign funded push to take over the state's redistricting process, a measure Snead says could have swung three to six congressional seats
• Every Democrat in the Ohio legislature voted against that ban, and attorney Marc Elias sued to overturn it in Ohio and again in Kansas, losing both times
• Eleven states have now banned foreign money in ballot campaigns, and Snead wants all fifty
• The Supreme Court ruling that forced Arizona to accept the federal form, and why Arizona now runs a bifurcated ballot
• Why Snead argues states need their own upfront proof of citizenship laws even if the SAVE America Act passes
• Jenny Beth Martin on asking Senator Mike Lee to write what became the SAVE America Act, and carrying it to 27 states in two and a half years
• About 20 million voting eligible Americans move every year, and most states need two federal election cycles, up to four years, to clear the old registration
• The interstate list maintenance model bill adopted by the American Legislative Exchange Council, and why red states sending cancellation requests puts pressure on blue states
• Thirty six states require voter identification, and it only takes 38 to amend the Constitution
• The hardship exemptions still sitting inside strong photo identification laws in Georgia and Texas, and how Ohio removed all of its exemptions but one
• Signature matching on mail ballots is subjective, and what an objective voter identification standard would look like instead
• The difference between a poll worker and a poll watcher, why the average American poll worker is 67 years old, and the trainings coming to Georgia on August 28, Reno on September 11, Las Vegas on September 12, and Wisconsin on October 2 and 3
