Senator Josh Hawley wrote to the chief executive of Flock Safety about what he calls, in his own words, an unprecedented national surveillance network. Jenny Beth Martin reads the numbers out and stops on the one that shocked her: 20 billion vehicles scanned every single month.
Nothing stands between that data and whatever comes next except an internal corporate policy that the company can rewrite whenever it likes.
Then she adds the part that makes this a different kind of story. Senator Bernie Sanders posted against Flock, calling for an end to artificial intelligence mass surveillance, and the post was running about 14,000 likes when the show checked that morning. The left and the right have landed in the same place.
Stacy Washington splits it into two issues. The first is data centers, which she thinks Democrats are deliberately weaponizing to ride into 2028, sending operatives into local planning meetings; she watched 16 people show up to a county council meeting in Saint Louis County reading the same three lines, which is not what organic opposition looks like. There are already almost 6,000 data centers in America, and she wants Missouri to land a couple of them and negotiate hard for what the community gets in exchange.
The cameras are the other thing entirely. Most people oppose surveillance unless they are the ones doing it, and her core point is procedural: there has never been a referendum on this. No local or state entity has asked its citizens whether public safety dollars should buy license plate readers. Collecting a record of every plate that passes a camera is enormous, and it went in without a vote.
Jenny Beth Martin's caution is that she does not believe the other side's objection is principled. These are the same people who set up hotlines so neighbors could report neighbors for not wearing a mask. Stacy Washington's answer is blunter: they have not figured out how to aim it yet.
