Jenny Beth Martin says it plainly: we have to finish the job we started in Iran. Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev, a physicist the KGB expelled from the Soviet Union in 1980 and one of three men who briefed Ronald Reagan on the weakness of the Soviet economy, agrees it has to be done, and then explains what finishing means. Iran is the most difficult situation in the world, he says, and he is not sure the military route was the best way to go. But once you have gone that way, the only way is to finish, and finishing means the end of the regime.
There are only two models for dealing with a totalitarian regime. One is what he calls the Marshall-MacArthur model, used on Germany and Japan: complete victory, total capitulation, occupation and control of the country, and the eradication of its ideology. If you stop in the middle, you do not win. You lose.
The other thing to understand is the difference between the regime and the country. His example is the Soviet Union in 1945: a country in ruins and famine after the Second World War, and a regime that was never stronger, which went without delay to occupy all of Eastern Europe. That, he says, is the problem with Iran now. The country has been damaged, even its military, but the regime has not been damaged significantly. By military means alone you cannot weaken a totalitarian regime; you can only finish it completely, or leave it to consolidate. Jenny Beth Martin asks whether that leaves a wounded bear. Wounded, he says, and consolidating its power, which it has already done. The operation weakened the Iranian opposition, the regime came out stronger, and that is not the outcome we want.
Guest: Dr. Yuri Yarim-Agaev, physicist, Soviet dissident and member of the Moscow Helsinki Group, expelled from the Soviet Union in 1980, founder of the Center for Democracy in the USSR, who briefed President Ronald Reagan before Reykjavik and before his trip to Moscow and worked as a scientist at MIT and Stanford.
